Psalm 78:36-38

³⁶ But ·their words were false [^Lthey deceived/or flattered him with their mouths],
    and with their tongues they lied to him.
³⁷ Their hearts were not really ·loyal to [steadfast toward] God;
    they ·did not keep [were not faithful to] his ·agreement [covenant].
³⁸ Still God was ·merciful [compassionate].
    He ·forgave their sins [made atonement for their guilt]
    and did not destroy them.
Many times he held back his anger
    and did not stir up all his ·anger [wrath].
